What is Artificial Superintelligence (ASI)?

Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) is one of those phrases that sounds like it has escaped from a science fiction book and walked straight into an executive board deck. It sounds made‑up.
That is part of the problem. The term is now used for several different things at once: a serious research concern, a speculative future scenario, a marketing flourish, a policy risk category, and sometimes just a dramatic way of saying "a very capable AI system". Those meanings overlap, but as you might appreciate, they are not the same.
So the useful question is not only "What is ASI?" It is also "What would have to be true before the phrase deserved to be used?"
The short version is this: artificial superintelligence (ASI) would be an AI system, or a tightly connected system of AI systems, that exceeds the best human intelligence across a wide range of important cognitive work. Not just one task. Not just chess, protein folding, maths competitions, code generation, image creation, or fluent conversation. ASI implies breadth, depth, autonomy, and practical effectiveness beyond human capability.
That is a much stronger claim than "AI is getting impressive". Current systems are impressive. They are also uneven, brittle, expensive, dependent on infrastructure, and still very far from reliably outperforming humans at everything that matters. The interesting part is that both things are true at once.
IBM's Think explainer lands on a similar boundary. It describes ASI as a hypothetical software‑based AI system whose intellectual scope goes beyond human intelligence, while also stressing that today's AI remains much closer to narrow or weak AI than to that future state. That is a useful plain‑English guardrail. ASI is not "the next model release". It is a much stronger claim about general capability.
I have written elsewhere about the more immediate effects of AI on developers and the web industry. This article is about the more extreme end of the same curve: what people mean when they talk about artificial superintelligence, why the definition is slippery, and why serious researchers argue about it without always meaning the same thing.
ASI, AGI, and Narrow AI are Not the Same Thing
It helps to separate three ideas that often get blended together.
- Narrow AI is AI that performs a specific task or class of tasks. A spam filter, recommendation engine, image classifier, chess engine, speech recogniser, and code‑completion tool all fit here, even when they are extremely powerful.
- Artificial general intelligence (AGI) usually means an AI system that can perform a broad range of cognitive tasks at roughly human level or better. There is no single accepted definition, which is one reason debates about AGI become messy so quickly.
- Artificial superintelligence (ASI) means something beyond AGI: a system whose general cognitive ability is substantially above human level across many domains.
That "general" part matters. Beating every human at Go is not ASI. A system that can generate better icons than most designers is not ASI. A system that solves one benchmark at superhuman level is not ASI. Those may be pieces of the story, but they are not the thing itself.
The 2024 ICML paper "Levels of AGI" is useful because it tries to make this conversation less vague. Meredith Ringel Morris and colleagues argue for classifying systems by both performance and generality, and for treating autonomy as a separate deployment property rather than a magical ingredient.
That framing is helpful for ASI too. A system might be very general but not very autonomous. It might be highly autonomous but only in a narrow domain. It might beat most humans in many tests but still fail badly in ordinary real‑world settings. ASI should not be reduced to one number on one leaderboard.
Where the Idea Comes from
The idea is older than the current language around foundation models.
In 1965, the statistician I. J. Good wrote about the "first ultraintelligent machine" in "Speculations Concerning the First Ultraintelligent Machine". His definition was blunt: a machine that could far surpass all the intellectual activities of any person, however clever. He then pointed out the recursive sting in that idea. Designing machines is itself an intellectual activity, so a sufficiently capable machine might help design even better machines.
That is the seed of the "intelligence explosion" argument. If a machine can improve the process that improves machines, capability growth might become unusually fast.
Nick Bostrom's 2014 book "Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies" brought that line of thinking into a much wider public debate. Bostrom's central concern is not merely that machines could become cleverer than people in the abstract. It is that a system with very broad strategic, scientific, engineering, and planning ability could become unusually powerful, especially if its goals were not aligned with human interests.
You do not have to accept every part of Bostrom's argument to see why the topic matters. The important move is to stop treating intelligence as a parlour trick and start treating it as a source of leverage. Humans did not become dominant because we are the strongest animal in the forest. We became dominant because cognition compounds through tools, language, institutions, science, and technology.
If artificial cognition could compound faster than human cognition, the consequences would not look like "a better chatbot". They would look like a new source of scientific, economic, political, and technical leverage.
What Would Make a System Superintelligent?
There is no official checklist, but there are several traits that would make the word "superintelligence" more defensible.
Breadth
The system would need to handle many domains, not just one. It should be able to reason across science, software, strategy, language, engineering, economics, security, and social systems in a way that transfers between contexts.
Depth
It would not be enough to be competent in many areas. ASI implies performance beyond the best human specialists in many of them. That is a high bar. Being a useful assistant to a scientist is not the same thing as consistently outperforming top scientists.
Autonomy
ASI would probably involve some ability to plan, act, monitor results, use tools, and adapt over time. Autonomy is not the same thing as intelligence, but intelligence without the ability to act has a very different risk and impact profile.
Speed and Scale
Digital systems can run faster than humans, copy themselves more easily, and operate in parallel. Even a system only modestly above human level could become transformative if it could run thousands or millions of instances, work continuously, and coordinate effectively.
Self‑Improvement or AI‑Accelerated Research
The most dramatic ASI scenarios involve AI systems helping improve AI systems. This does not require a cartoon version of a machine rewriting itself in a dark room. It could look more mundane: AI systems generating hypotheses, designing experiments, improving training pipelines, finding architecture changes, writing evaluation code, searching for vulnerabilities, or accelerating hardware and data workflows.
That said, self‑improvement is not magic. It still runs into compute, energy, data, verification, manufacturing, regulatory, market, and organisational constraints. Good's insight is a possible feedback loop, not a guarantee that the loop runs without friction.
IBM's list of possible ASI building blocks is useful for keeping that discussion grounded. It points to large language models and massive datasets, multisensory AI, more advanced neural networks, neuromorphic computing, evolutionary computation, and AI‑generated programming as areas that might contribute to future ASI. That does not mean those technologies add up to superintelligence today. It means ASI, if it arrives, is more likely to emerge from several advancing technical threads than from one isolated breakthrough.
Current AI is Powerful, but It is Not ASI
The best evidence for taking advanced AI seriously is also evidence against pretending that ASI already exists.
Stanford's 2026 AI Index reports that AI capability is still accelerating, with frontier systems reaching or exceeding human baselines on demanding science, maths, multimodal reasoning, and coding benchmarks. It also points to the "jagged frontier" of current AI: systems can perform astonishingly well on some difficult tasks while failing at tasks that look simple to people, such as reliably reading analogue clocks.
The 2026 International AI Safety Report makes a similar point. It describes major progress in mathematics, coding, autonomous operation, and scientific capabilities, but also notes that current systems still hallucinate, struggle with real‑world constraints, underperform in some languages, and remain uneven outside controlled conditions.
That is the practical tension. Current frontier AI is not mere autocomplete in any dismissive sense. It can write working software, reason through parts of scientific problems, operate tools, and support real work. But it is also not a generally reliable replacement for human judgement, scientific taste, operational accountability, or long‑horizon ownership.

The useful question is rarely "can the tool produce output?" It is "can the system own the consequences of that output in the messy environment where the work actually lives?"
ASI would have to clear that second bar at a superhuman level.
Intelligence is Not Only Benchmark Performance
One trap in this topic is treating intelligence as if it were just a score.
Benchmarks matter. They give us something to measure. Without them, every discussion collapses into vibes and marketing copy. But benchmarks are also incomplete. They can be gamed, saturated, contaminated, or disconnected from the work we actually care about.
Legg and Hutter's 2007 paper "Universal Intelligence: A Definition of Machine Intelligence" is useful background here because it tries to formalise intelligence as an agent's ability to achieve goals across a wide range of environments.
You do not need the mathematical formalism for everyday use, but the direction is important. Intelligence is not only about answering questions. It is adapting to environments, choosing actions, learning from feedback, dealing with uncertainty, and achieving goals. That is why autonomy, tool use, and deployment context matter so much in ASI discussions.
A model that can solve hard exam questions but cannot manage an unfamiliar software environment is not superintelligent in any practical sense. A system that can run a research programme, notice when its assumptions are wrong, redesign its tools, coordinate experiments, and improve the quality of its own work is a much more serious candidate.
Why the ASI Debate Keeps Coming Back to Goals
The safety issue is often caricatured as "what if the AI becomes evil?" That is not the serious version of the argument.
The serious version is about objective mismatch.
Software does what it is built and incentivised to do, not what everyone later wishes it had meant. In ordinary systems, that gives us bugs, edge cases, perverse incentives, and monitoring failures. In powerful AI systems, the concern is that a poorly specified objective could be pursued with much more competence than expected.
The 2016 paper "Concrete Problems in AI Safety" is still one of the clearest technical entry points. Dario Amodei, Chris Olah, Jacob Steinhardt, Paul Christiano, John Schulman, and Dan Mane framed accident risk around problems such as avoiding negative side effects, preventing reward hacking, handling distribution shift, safe exploration, and scalable supervision.
Those ideas sound less dramatic than "machine apocalypse", but they are closer to the engineering problem. If a system is trained, rewarded, or deployed in a way that makes the wrong behaviour locally useful, it may learn the wrong thing. If humans cannot supervise the system well enough, the wrong thing may become harder to detect. If the system is operating in a new environment, previous safety evidence may not transfer.
ASI raises the stakes because the same failure modes could operate inside a system that is more capable, more autonomous, and harder to inspect.
Misuse is Separate from Misalignment
There are at least two big risk families here, and they should not be blurred together.
The first is misuse. A powerful AI system could help people do harmful things more cheaply or effectively: cyberattacks, fraud, biological or chemical research misuse, surveillance, manipulation, or automated vulnerability discovery.
The second is misalignment or loss of control. That is the concern that an AI system itself might pursue goals, subgoals, or strategies that humans did not intend and cannot easily stop.
The 2024 Science article "Managing extreme AI risks amid rapid progress" treats both kinds of risk as serious in the context of increasingly general and autonomous systems.
The 2026 International AI Safety Report is careful about uncertainty, but it also records meaningful real‑world movement in these areas. It notes improved cyber capability, concern around biological and chemical assistance, harder safety testing, and evidence that models can sometimes distinguish test settings from deployment settings. That last point matters. If a model behaves differently when it recognises it is being evaluated, pre‑deployment assurance becomes much harder.
Again, none of this proves that ASI is imminent. It does show why the discussion has moved from pure speculation into governance, evaluation, and security.
The Timelines are Uncertain, and That is the Point
People often want a date. They want to know whether ASI arrives in 2028, 2040, 2100, or never.
The honest answer is that nobody knows.
Expert surveys are useful, but they are not prophecy. The 2025 Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research paper "Thousands of AI Authors on the Future of AI" reports predictions from 2,778 AI researchers. It found large uncertainty and major sensitivity to wording. In one framing, respondents estimated a 10 percent chance of high‑level machine intelligence by 2027 and a 50 percent chance by 2047, while full automation of all occupations was forecast much later.
That spread is the story. Experts disagree because the path depends on technical progress, compute, data, post‑training methods, robotics, economic incentives, regulation, safety constraints, hardware supply chains, and whether current model families keep scaling effectively.
The right conclusion is not "ignore it because the timelines are uncertain". It is also not "panic because some people have short timelines". The right conclusion is that systems with potentially high impact and uncertain timelines deserve serious preparation.
That is boring compared with a countdown clock. It is also more useful.
ASI Might Not Be One Model
Another easy mistake is imagining ASI as one giant model sitting in one data centre.
It might not look like that.
A future superintelligent system could be a stack: multiple models, retrieval systems, planning systems, tool APIs, code execution environments, simulation tools, robotics interfaces, memory layers, monitoring systems, and human organisations wrapped around them. The intelligence may live in the coordination between parts as much as inside one model.
That matters because organisations may create ASI‑like effects before they create one clean ASI object. A lab full of AI agents accelerating research, writing code, testing hypotheses, improving infrastructure, and coordinating through human operators could matter even if no individual model has a neat claim to being "the" superintelligence.
This is already how many advanced systems become powerful. The web is not one server. A company is not one employee. A search engine is not one algorithm. Capability often appears through systems, feedback loops, and infrastructure.
ASI may be the same, which makes evaluation harder. You do not only need to ask what the model can answer. You need to ask what the deployed system can do.
The Business Version is Not Abstract
For most teams, ASI is not a procurement decision in 2026. Nobody is buying "one artificial superintelligence, enterprise plan, annual billing".
But the early versions of the same questions are already real:
- Which tasks are we allowing AI to perform without review?
- Which data is being exposed to model providers, agents, or plugins?
- Which workflows now depend on generated content, generated code, or generated analysis?
- Who is accountable when the AI‑assisted workflow is wrong?
- Which security boundaries exist around tool‑using agents?
- Which parts of our codebase, content model, analytics, or customer process are now being changed faster than we can review properly?
That is why ASI is relevant even if it remains speculative. It forces us to think in gradients. Systems do not need to be superintelligent before autonomy, opacity, dependency, and weak governance become expensive.

ASI would be the extreme version of that shift, but even present systems already make provenance, source quality, and structured evidence more important.
What Would Be Sensible Preparation?
The sensible answer depends on who is asking.
For AI labs, preparation means stronger capability evaluations, model security, interpretability research, alignment work, incident reporting, external scrutiny, and governance that can actually constrain deployment. OpenAI's Preparedness Framework, Anthropic's Responsible Scaling Policy, and Google DeepMind's Frontier Safety Framework are examples of frontier labs trying to define capability thresholds and associated safeguards, although these are still voluntary industry frameworks and should be judged by evidence, not branding:

For governments, preparation means better technical capacity, stronger visibility into frontier systems, international coordination, compute and model‑security policy, liability rules, and institutions able to respond faster than ordinary legislative cycles.
For ordinary software teams, it is more grounded:
- keep humans accountable for consequential decisions
- treat AI‑generated code as untrusted until reviewed
- log when AI materially contributes to customer‑facing or operational decisions
- limit tool access for agents by default
- avoid putting sensitive data into casual AI workflows
- use evaluations that resemble real work, not only demos
- track rework, incident patterns, and review burden
- keep source links and provenance attached to AI‑assisted research
None of that requires believing a machine god is arriving next Tuesday. It only requires noticing that capability, autonomy, and organisational dependency are increasing.
A Sensible Reading Trail

Conclusion
Artificial superintelligence is not just "AI, but better". It is a claim about breadth, depth, autonomy, speed, and leverage beyond human capability.
That is why the term should be used carefully. Current AI systems are powerful enough to change real work, but too uneven to be called superintelligent. They can exceed humans in specific domains, help with many kinds of knowledge work, and still fail in ways that make no sense to a person. That jaggedness is not a footnote. It is central to understanding where we are.
The serious ASI question is not whether a chatbot sounds clever. It is whether artificial systems could eventually become better than humans at the kinds of thinking that improve science, software, strategy, institutions, and the technology of AI itself.
If that happens, the consequences will not be confined to one industry. The risks will not be confined to one failure mode. The benefits will not be evenly distributed by default.
So the grounded position is neither hype nor dismissal. ASI is not here. It may not arrive soon. It may arrive in a form that looks less cinematic and more infrastructural than people expect. But the path towards it is already changing how we build, govern, secure, and trust software systems.
That is enough reason to take the term seriously, and enough reason not to use it carelessly.
